ONE DIRECTION MOVES EVERY TILE

2048 is a number puzzle game where matched tiles merge to form larger numbers, and the whole grid moves at once. When you slide in one direction, all the tiles go in that direction and you cannot just slide the pair you want to combine. Two of the same numbers colliding makes one tile with the following value. Then planning entails thinking about the layout of the entire board -- where other tiles will shift along with a probable match.

Build Toward the Target Tile

The goal is to combine tiles to make a tile with the number 2048. Joining matched numbers creates higher values, and each larger tile is linked to the smaller pairs used to create it. You have three board sizes to choose from: 4x4, 5x5 and 6x6. All these layouts have the same goal, but the number of cells alters the amount of space you have to place your tiles.

Why Do Empty Cells Matter

Empty squares enable you to make more moves. As the grid fills up, it becomes more critical to keep beneficial arrangements, because packed tiles give less opportunity to transfer numbers into matching spots. A full board ends the round when no legal merge remains. Watch both the available space and the equal values that could still combine before choosing another direction.

Shift Numbers With Either Control

Use the Left Mouse Button or Arrow keys to move the tiles. Choose a direction to shift the whole grid, bringing matching values together where the arrangement allows. Check out resulting positions before moving again. The next configuration of the board is part of the current decision because each slide affects many tiles.

FROM MATCHING PAIRS TO HIGHER VALUES

The puzzle merges number construction with the problem of limited grid space. Select the size of your board and then match equal tiles in 2048 to make space for another move.
