SEVEN COLUMNS AND FOUR FOUNDATIONS

A standard 52-card deck divides between seven tableau columns and a stock pile in Klondike Solitaire. The tableau contains 28 cards, with columns increasing from one card to seven and only the uppermost card in each column initially face up. The remaining 24 cards form the face-down stock. Four empty foundation spaces provide the destinations for completing the game, with each reserved for a single suit.

Build Columns While Revealing Hidden Cards

Move cards between tableau columns in descending rank, alternating red and black. A black eight, for example, can go onto a red nine, and a correctly ordered stack can move together. When moving exposed cards uncovers a face-down card, that card turns face up. Only a King, or a correctly sequenced stack beginning with a King, can occupy an empty column.

Either draw from the stock and place into the waste pile using the one card variant or three card version. If the suit and rank of a card are suitable, it can be played from the tableau or from the top of the trash to the foundations.

Why Do Foundations Run Upward

The goal in Klondike Solitaire is to move all 52 cards to the four foundations. Each suit starts with the Ace and runs in rank order to the King. This gives us two ordering tasks: tableau columns go down in alternating hues, and foundations go up in one outfit. Re-organizing the tableau reveals more cards and allows more of the deck to be used to build the foundations.

EVERY SUIT COMPLETED FROM ACE TO KING

Progress is made by playing cards, keeping lawful runs and moving relevant cards to their foundations. Other than the tableau, stock draws are another way to get cards.
